City 1 reclaim Division 1 title

17/05/10 > All

CAMBRIDGE City re-claimed the Cambridgeshire Division One crown with a 12-8 victory over defending champions Cambridge Tigers in their final match to preserve a 100 per cent league record and cap a fine season for the club.

But, the win was far from easy. After racing to a 3-0 lead and still up 5-2 at half time, Tigers were in control before City produced a stunning fightback with Simon McGregor and Carla Bennett scoring to draw within one goal.

The two sides traded goals before City hit the front for the first time, up 7-6 albeit briefly.

At 8-8, the match was finely balanced, but the Reds stepped up a gear in the dying stages, with four unanswered goals sealing a deserved victory.

McGregor lead the way for City with four goals, while former England international Bennett netted three.

A delighted City coach Janine Collier said: "Winning the League this year is a great feat. Following the departure of New Zealand captain Anna Teen, Angus Davidson and Sian Mawditt at the end of last season, and plagued by a number of serious injuries, we have been a changed team this season.

"The players have shown real character, have had the courage, the determination, the dedication and the drive to step up and have believed in themselves and each other."

This is the first time since 2003 that a team has won the county title without dropping a point.

City II also overcame Tigers II 10-9 to clinch third, while Ely Vikings, in their first year in the top flight, finished fourth.

City's success did not stop at the county league, with City I finishing fifth in Division One of the South Eastern Regional League, ahead of Tigers in sixth, while City II won the inaugural Division Two title.
